El Instituto de Estudios Gerontológicos cerró un año de intensa actividad, consolidando una agenda que articula docencia, investigación, extensión e internacionalización con una mirada transversal sobre el envejecimiento, la longevidad y la economía plateada. Bajo la dirección de la Lic. Jorgelina Ricchezza, el Instituto profundizó líneas de trabajo que posicionan a nuestra universidad como un espacio de referencia regional en el abordaje académico y social de la vejez.
Uno de los hitos del año fue el lanzamiento del Mar del Plata Longevity Hub, una iniciativa que propone pensar la ciudad como un espacio de innovación en longevidad. Este proyecto tendrá continuidad a nivel internacional, ya que nuestra universidad fue invitada a presentar el caso como módulo de trabajo en un seminario que se dictará en Parsons – The New School, en Nueva York. Allí el Instituto expondrá la experiencia local vinculada al diseño y la construcción de entornos para la longevidad.
“Estamos invitados a poder presentar en ese seminario el caso Mar del Plata Longevity Hub, como un ejemplo de construcción y diseño de la longevidad”, explicó Ricchezza y adelantó que en ese espacio también se aplicará uno de los instrumentos de sensibilización desarrollados por la Dra. Graciela Zarebski, directora de la Maestría en Psicogerontología de la UA, orientado a reflexionar sobre el propio proceso de envejecimiento.
En paralelo, el Instituto avanza en el diseño de una Diplomatura en Economía Plateada y Longevidad, que será lanzada el próximo año. Se trata de una propuesta novedosa, dirigida por Flora Proverbio y con la curaduría académica de Zarebski, que se aparta del formato tradicional de módulos para trabajar a partir de desafíos concretos. “No trabajamos con módulos, sino con challenges, con problemas reales que invitan a diseñar y construir nuevas formas de pensar la longevidad”, señaló la directora del Instituto.
En este marco, Ricchezza subrayó que el abordaje de la economía plateada no puede reducirse únicamente a una lógica de mercado o consumo. “No se trata solo de pensar qué productos o servicios se les pueden vender a las personas mayores, sino de cómo transitar este momento vital desde el bienestar, la subjetividad y los proyectos personales”, explicó. Desde esta perspectiva, el Instituto trabaja con una mirada integral que reconoce a las personas mayores de 50 como protagonistas activos, con deseos, capacidades y un fuerte impacto social y económico. “Sabemos que este grupo mueve cerca del 40 por ciento de la economía a nivel mundial, pero también que el verdadero desafío es pensar la calidad de los años que vamos a vivir”, afirmó.
Otra línea central del trabajo en 2025 estuvo vinculada a los talleres de UPAMI, una experiencia sostenida desde hace más de doce años en la Atlántida. Estos espacios no solo convocan a una gran cantidad de personas mayores de la región, sino que funcionan como verdaderos laboratorios pedagógicos para los estudiantes. “Los talleres permiten que asuman un rol activo como talleristas y que las personas mayores se posicionen como estudiantes, generando un intercambio intergeneracional donde todos se empoderan y ponen en valor sus saberes”, explicó Ricchezza.
La propuesta de UPAMI se caracteriza además por su diversidad temática y su abordaje transversal. A lo largo del tiempo se desarrollaron talleres de arte, informática, finanzas, historia, turismo y paseos guiados, entre otros, con la participación de distintas carreras. Esta lógica refuerza la idea de que el trabajo con la vejez atraviesa a todas las facultades y no se limita a un campo disciplinar específico.
En el plano de la investigación, el Instituto tuvo una participación destacada en el Congreso de la Sociedad Argentina de Geriatría y Gerontología, donde presentó proyectos vinculados a la inclusión de instrumentos de evaluación gerontológica y su integración con inteligencia artificial. En ediciones anteriores, una de estas investigaciones obtuvo el segundo premio del congreso, lo que impulsó la continuidad de la línea de trabajo. Durante este año, el equipo avanzó en la incorporación de un instrumento abreviado dentro de sistemas de IA y en propuestas de sensibilización orientadas a pensar el propio envejecimiento desde edades tempranas.
El trabajo interdisciplinario también se reflejó en investigaciones conjuntas con la Facultad de Arquitectura, centradas en las percepciones de los estudiantes sobre su propio envejecimiento. Estos primeros hallazgos formarán parte de un libro compilado por la Dra. Zarebski, que se publicará en 2026 y reunirá distintas investigaciones desarrolladas desde el Instituto.
La proyección internacional fue otro de los ejes del año. El Instituto fortaleció vínculos con universidades de Chile y avanzó en la firma de un nuevo convenio con la Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Morelos, en México. A través de clases espejo y experiencias COIL, estudiantes de Psicología compartieron actividades académicas que abren nuevas posibilidades para investigaciones conjuntas y desarrollos regionales. “La internacionalización nos permite seguir creciendo y pensar problemas comunes desde distintas realidades”, destacó Ricchezza.
En cuanto a lo formativo, la Maestría de Psicogerontología ocupa un lugar central. Desde su lanzamiento, el posgrado ha permitido formar profesionales con una mirada crítica e interdisciplinaria, y ya cuenta con las primeras camadas de graduados y graduadas que hoy se encuentran insertos en proyectos académicos, investigaciones y experiencias de intervención territorial. “La maestría no solo consolida trayectorias académicas, sino que también produce conocimiento situado que vuelve al territorio”, señaló Ricchezza, y destacó que muchos de los trabajos finales se transforman en insumos para nuevas líneas de investigación, publicaciones y acciones concretas en la región.
En ese entramado de docencia, investigación y territorio, también se inscribe el trabajo de graduadas y graduados de la Atlántida, como el caso de Marcela García, quien realizó el primer relevamiento sobre personas mayores en Villa Gesell. La investigación, difundida en un medio local, aportó datos inexistentes hasta el momento para el municipio y se convirtió en un insumo valioso para la planificación de políticas públicas. “No hay que esperar a recibirse para ser útil en la comunidad. La universidad produce conocimiento que puede tener impacto real”, subrayó la directora del Instituto.
De cara al futuro, uno de los grandes proyectos es consolidar a Mar del Plata como un hub de longevidad, articulando innovación, tecnología, economía plateada y bienestar. “Creemos que la ciudad tiene condiciones únicas para convertirse en un polo de referencia en Silver Economy y en propuestas para personas mayores de 50, donde converjan todas las facultades trabajando de manera mancomunada”, afirmó Ricchezza.
El balance del año deja en evidencia un trabajo sostenido y en expansión que posiciona al Instituto de Estudios Gerontológicos como un espacio clave para pensar los desafíos actuales y futuros del envejecimiento, con una mirada académica comprometida con el territorio, la inclusión y la calidad de vida.
